2018 Easter Offering
For many, many centuries Christianity hardly existed in the Hindu kingdom of Nepal. Christianity was considered a foreign religion and barred from the country. Then, in 1952 a church was formed with 29 members. In 1990 there were around 200,000 believers (Operation World, 7th Edition, page 619). Today there are more than one million out of a population of over thirty million.
Evangelical Friends Mission has been part of the explosive growth of the church in Nepal since the mid-1990s. We are blessed with missionaries who have served faithfully under tough conditions. The Lord has used them and their evangelists to make Nepal EFM’s largest mission field. There are currently more than eighty Evangelical Friends churches. That’s about seven thousand Evangelical Friends. To God be the glory!
During the 1960s there was a veteran missionary couple from Ohio Yearly Meeting (now known as Evangelical Friends Church-Eastern Region) who lived in the Kathmandu Valley and served in a Christian hospital. Their names: Ezra and Francis DeVol. Could they have possibly imagined in those days that there would be so many Christians in Nepal fifty years later? And so many Evangelical Friends? Ezra and Francis are now part of the great cloud of witnesses mentioned in Hebrews 12:1. Surely they are thrilled with what they are seeing!
In the lessons that accompany this letter you will meet three leaders of the Evangelical Friends movement in Nepal. You will hear their testimonies and see their faces. I hope you will be as inspired as I am by their stories and dedication to our Lord Jesus. I also hope that you will share these lessons with your Sunday school classes and small groups so that they can be inspired too.
Each year the donations received through the Easter Offering go towards the general ministries of EFM. Your gifts bless the work that is going on in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Ecuador, India, Ireland, Mexico, Nepal, Philippines, Rwanda, and among Muslimbackground believers in Europe and the Middle East. Please be faithful to give towards this offering as the Lord leads.
The harvest in Nepal is still great and the workers too few. Pray to the Lord of the harvest that He will cast out more workers into this field. There is much work to be done!
