What is Evangelical Friends Mission looking for in a missionary?

First and foremost, a consistent Christian life and a sure "call" from God or certain sense of leading from the Holy Spirit to become a missionary.

Second, harmony with the teachings and beliefs of the Evangelical Friends Church. Our Statement of Faith is available, and is somewhat similar to other evangelicals.

Third, respect for national leaders, other cultures and people in authority. Respect is a high priority in serving well across cultural boundaries.

Fourth, the ability to get along well with others - nationals, missionary workers, home office, supporting churches and people in general.

Fifth, a willingness to learn church planting and/or leadership development skills. These are our major concerns, although we can always discuss other passions and goals if they are from God.

Let's talk!!! Nobody's perfect.

Chuck Mylander
Evangelical Friends Mission Director

Future Missionary Retreat

Greetings to you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We are very excited about the upcoming Retreat for Future Missionaries!

My name is Brad Carpenter and my wife, Chelsea, and I are missionaries with EFM (Evangelical Friends Mission) in Rwanda, Africa. I have served there for 2 ½ years, (returning in July 2008 to marry Chelsea the following month), and the two of us will be returning to Rwanda in June 2009. We are really thankful for this time in the US and praise God for the opportunity to be a part of this retreat in May. It is so exciting to be called by God, to be in relationship with Him, and to have the privilege of serving Him!

Chelsea and I were recently in a similar place to you - seeking the Lord’s direction for His calling and timing for our lives. We want to shout from the mountain tops that our God is FAITHFUL! He is faithful to lead and guide us! He is faithful to teach and faithful to empower us by His Holy Spirit to do what He calls us to. He has been faithful, He is faithful and He will be faithful to us and to you, now and for always!

We see that God is doing something very special and exciting in these days among Evangelical Friends. He is calling Friends to serve Him as missionaries all over the world, to be a part of bringing His kingdom and His will here to earth. We would like to officially invite you to come to this Retreat for Future Missionaries, which will be held in conjunction with the EFM Board Meetings at Quaker Ridge Camp in Colorado. The retreat will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 and finish with lunch on Saturday, May 30th. This will be an awesome time to be together as Friends who will one day be serving all over the world!

If you are called to serve the Lord in missions, we believe that there are many reasons you should come to this retreat: 1) It will be a wonderful time of fellowship, worship, and prayer with others whom God will be using around the world, 2) It will be a great time to learn about what God is doing in the world among Friends (EFM and the regional missions: EFC-Eastern Region, NWYM, and EFC-Southwest) and how you might fit into His work, 3) It will be a great time of learning from the Lord, missionaries, and Evangelical Friends leaders from across the US, as well as informal times of visiting with them, 4) It will include times of solitude with the Lord in the majesty of His creation, and more!

If you have any questions about the retreat or how to apply, please ask me at bc.carpenter@yahoo.com.

Grace and Peace,

Brad Carpenter
